General Description of Position:

Housing and Dining Services offers a unique and exciting opportunity for full time employment as a Food Service Supervisor with Union Station by JP’s, a new, soon to open full-service restaurant.

The Food Service Supervisor positions offer the opportunity to demonstrate culinary skills and to provide first line leadership (shift leader) in the preparation, production, and execution of custom food orders.  The positions will work as part of a diverse team environment dedicated to providing and supporting a “guest first” service culture and to demonstrate work habits that support a goal oriented environment.  We are seeking qualified applicants for two openings.

Information about the Department:

Housing and Dining Services (HDS) is a large, self-operated auxiliary department serving more than 6,000 students that call the K-State campus home.  This "home away from home" meets more than the basic needs of students living with us — we provide affordable, safe and engaging accommodations for our residents, while finding unique ways to support them in their academic pursuits.  The department is comprised of four functional areas:  dining services; facilities management; student living; and administrative services. 

In addition to serving students and the campus community, our retail venues provide the opportunity to serve the local community.  HDS retail operations include JP’s Sports Grill, Cornerstone Coffee & Bakery, The Bakery at Derby Dining Center, Quik Cats Convenience Stores, Overtime Grill at Kramer Dining Center and Union Station by JP’s, our newest retail restaurant that will include catering services.

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Participate in the production of quality food and beverages following standardized menus, recipes and procedures.
  • Assists in the coordination of food production using recipe, portion control and small-large batch cooking methods for restaurant customers.
  • Serves as lead worker for University Support Staff (USS) and hourly student employees in food production and/or service. 
  • Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of USS and/or student employees in the preparation and service of quality food.
  • Evaluates the effective use of resources and provides input for improvements. 
  • Actively participates in job training sessions and meetings.
  • Implements and adheres to HACCP and Food Safety systems in production and service areas. 
  • Promotes a “guest first” service culture and consistently engages in positive staff interactions that support an effective team environment.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • “From scratch” volume food production experience.
  • Lead worker or supervisory experience.
  • High school graduation/GED.
  • One year of experience in full service, fast casual restaurant, or commercial/institutional kitchen.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Considerable knowledge of large scale food preparation, equipment, health sanitation, and safety procedures.

Other Requirements:

Work shifts will include evening and weekends.

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$12.63-$18.95 per hour.  Some work shifts are eligible for an additional shift differential of $.40 per hour.

Please note: the minimum salary for this position is $12.63 per hour.  Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
