About This Role:

Kansas State University is seeking a Regional Agronomist (Assistant Professor) at the Southwest Research-Extension Center at Garden City. This position is 80% extension/20% research. This is a tenure-track position with the tenure home in the Department of Agronomy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead an active and innovative extension educational program in crops, soils, weeds, forage, and rangelands in Southwest Kansas. Support county and district-level extension programs. Develop an applied research program that complements and informs the extension program. Manage the crop performance testing program at SWREC. The overall program should be responsive to the dynamic challenges of crop production in Southwest Kansas and integrate with other subject matter disciplines at the regional and state level. Scholarship of extension includes communication with clientele via public meetings/conferences, social media, web sites, and other electronic means; developing traditional extension publications and bulletins; and interacting and sharing ideas with other extension and research colleagues. Applied research scholarship includes securing grants and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific publications. Service expectations include participation in appropriate professional organizations and on departmental/college committees.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in agronomy; crop, soil, or weed science; or closely related field with a strong background in applied agronomy.
  • Ability to conceive, plan, promote, and deliver extension educational programs to producers, industry personnel, and county extension agents.
  • Ability to conceive, plan, implement and publish applied field-based research.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Interpersonal skills that promote interaction in a multidisciplinary context.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting and create an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in crop production in semi-arid dryland and irrigated cropping systems including the production of corn, wheat, grain sorghum, cotton, and soybeans.

  • Demonstrated record of extension and scientific publication and grant writing appropriate for current career development.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
